Well - we made it! No Smoking Day 2009 has come and gone. And we're sure in Stockport that it was big success.

Not only did we get involved with Stockport County and have a big presence both on and off the field at their League One match against Hartlepool United last week, but we also got out and about in the streets of Stockport to drive the stop smoking message home.

We managed to get coverage in the local papers and an online presence on Stockport Council's website.

We also had a No Smoking Stand at Stockport Council (the borough's biggest employer) on the day, where a Workplace Adviser was able to dish out useful help and advice to smokers who wanted to give up.

We're looking to build on the work we've put in during the run-up to No Smoking Day 2009 and we're keen on developing key relationships with local partners to help get the stop smoking message out load and clear over the coming months.

All the best to you all over the months ahead and I hope you've enjoyed keeping up-to-date with this years No Smoking Day plans and preparations. Roll on 2010!

WE'RE THERE! 09/03/09

'WE'RE THERE!

It's here! The week of No Smoking Day 2009 is upon us. We're ready to help as many people as possible to give up - or at least put them on the road to giving up.

We're getting our teeth into plenty of stuff this week. At Stockport County Football Club's League Two match against Hartlepool we'll be handing out stop smoking information and 'Big Cig' will be getting involved by being on the pitch at half time.

And on No Smoking Day itself, we've got at information point lined up at Stockport's busy shopping centre where help and advice will be available.

Our local Council is also hosting a 'Stop Smoking Day' so it makes for a really busy week.

I'll update you on how we get on next week.

Good luck to everyone in all that you're doing!

Rachael

LAST MINUTE ORGANISATION 02/03/09

'Big Cig' with me and some of the players

The clock is ticking. Last minute preparations are well underway for No Smoking Day next week.

We've been in touch with our local Council and it is hosting a No Smoking Day 'Drop In' in its canteen. A Stop Smoking Advisor is going to be on-hand to dish out advice and information to smokers who want to give up.

I've also been down to Stockport County Football Club's training ground for a photoshoot. The Club have been fantastic and are supporting our No Smoking Day 2009 activities.

As you can see 'Big Cig' joined me and some of the players for the No Smoking Day publicity.

Days are going quickly now, so I'll update you next week with more on what we're getting up to.

Bye,

Rachael

LESS THAN A MONTH TO GO 16/02/09

Crushed cigarette packet

Hi all,

How quickly does time seem to be going? I can't believe No Smoking Day is less than a month away.

There has been a big change here at Stockport Primary Care Trust - we're not called Stockport Primary Care Trust anymore! It's NHS Stockport. So the Stop Smoking team is slowly re-branding its products and services with the new name and logo. The new branding will also be used in our No Smoking Day activity too - so the change came at just the right time for that.

We're continuing our preparations - information packs are now on they way to local community points and we are in discussions on setting up different photocalls and press opportunities for No Smoking Day promotion - watch this space for more news soon.

If you want to get in touch or share your ideas, don't hesitate to drop me an email - it's rachael.turner@stockport-pct.nhs.uk

See ya!

Rachael

LET'S GET GOING 02/02/09

Quit it
Quit it

Rachael here again from Stockport Primary Care Trust - hope you're all well and getting set for No Smoking Day 2009.

Here in Stockport, we're rolling our sleeves up and getting going on with the planning and preparation for the big day in March.

We've drawn up our promotional material list. Posters, leaflets, bookmarks, balloons, pens, pencils, coasters, badges and fuzzy bugs are all on order.

And we have also been in touch with local GP surgeries, health centres, pharmacies and dentists letting them know to expect No Smoking Day packs.

We're also working closely with our local Council to make sure that we get the message into schools, libraries, community centres and local workplaces.

As well as the planning for No Smoking Day we're also continuing with our day-to-day activities. One recent event was a roadshow in Stockport town centre. We spoke with smokers and alerted them to the fact that No Smoking Day is just round the corner and that it would be a fantastic time to give up.

That's me on the right of the picture with my colleague Margaret at the recent Stop Smoking event - as you can see we're backing this year's No Smoking Day theme by letting smokers know that by quitting, it can help you save big money - especially at the moment when people are finding it tough to make ends meet.

I'll catch up with you all again soon - ta'ra for now!

Rachael

BIG KICK OFF! 19/01/09

Big thumbs down for Big Cig from Stockport County's mascots Animo and Fide
Big thumbs down for Big Cig from Stockport County's mascots Animo and Fide

Hi,

It’s Rachael here from Stockport Stop Smoking Service. I’m gonna keep you all updated on what Stockport is getting up to for this year’s No Smoking Day campaign.

No sooner has Christmas and New Year come and gone, now we’re throwing ourselves full pelt into the planning and preparation for No Smoking Day 2009.

And to help us kick off our big push towards Wednesday 11 March, we signed up our local football team – Stockport County Football Club to help us get the message to smokers that the New Year is a great time to kick the habit.

As you can see for our photo, County’s two mascots Animo and Fide were not to pleased to see ‘Big Cig’ soiling their home turf. They gave him the big thumbs down on a recent visit to the Coca Cola League 2 club’s home ground Edgeley Park.

And Mike from Stockport County Community Foundation is looking forward to working with the Stop Smoking Service to get as many people as possible to kick the habit

So with the support of our local footy team, we’re raring to go in run-up to No Smoking Day.

I’ll update you all with more in a couple of weeks.

Bye for now

Rachael
