Smoking Survey of Taxi Drivers in Simonside and Rykendyke and Biddick and All Saints 10/03/10
The Consultation Team are working with Environmental Health in carrying out a smoking survey of taxi rank drivers, as they are routine and manual workers, in the prioty areas of Simonside and Rykendyke and Biddick and All Saints. We will be gathering information about the reasons behind smoking and the barriers that prevent them from quitting. If they are interested in quitting we are hoping to use specialist help for groups to carry out CO tests and provide help for them to quit.

Hoops for Health Roadshow at Larkspur Community Primary School 10/03/10
The Newcastle Eagles will deliver the Hoops for Health programme in the Wrekenton area in partnership with Gateshead Council. The Newcastle Eagles will visit Larkspur Primary School to deliver the Hoops for Health Road Show on the 10th of March which is also No Smoking Day. Gateshead Council will be carrying out research on the 10th March to tie it in with the Hoops for Health Road show that the school will receive and No Smoking Day. The research is trying to get a better understanding of why people smoke, what can be done to help people stop smoking who want to and prevent future generations from starting. In addition to this the school as part of the road show will have a magic / escapology performance (3:00 pm – 3:20 pm). A strange idea you may think? The theme for No Smoking day this year is Breaking Free / Breaking the Chains. After the pupils have taken part in the road show we will put on a performance which will incorporate street performance and escapology (the link to Break the Chain). During this performance we will get the artist to ask the children questions around smoking, to see what they have learnt from the road show as well as get across key messages related to smoking and more importantly the message that giving up or breaking the chain is easier for some people than others (on average it takes 4 attempts before a person gives up). Parents will be invited to watch this as well so they can see what the children have learnt from the road show as well as getting key messages / information in a unique and interactive way. Information on Stop Smoking services in the area, freebies and people will be on hand to give advice to parents who are interested in giving up. In addition to this the Newcastle Eagles will have players in attendance delivering the work shops to the young people.

This is a mentoring event for Northumberland businesses taking part in the North East Better Health at Work award. There will be a No Smoking Day display and resources for up to 35 different businesses so that they can run displays in their workplaces on No Smoking Day. Health Trainers will be available over lunch time to take blood pressure and carbon monoxide measurements and give one to one advice on healthy lifestyle choices including quitting smoking. In the afternoon there will be specific training on raising awareness about the dangers of second hand smoke and how it can effect workers and their children. Delegates (up to 70) will be given information to enable them to advise their employees.

How to Break Free in Hartlepool 08/03/10
Approximately 200 premises – GP surgeries, pharmacies, health centres,libraries, workplaces etc, will be displaying posters and leaflets, sent to them by NHS Hartlepool, promoting the Day and encouraging smokers to Break Free! In the week running up to the Day the School Nurses will be holding a series of lunchtime Drop-ins in the town’s secondary schools. They will be on hand to offer advice, information and encouragement to parents and staff alike.

Health Trainers help people with Learning Disabilities take action against smoking 08/03/10
Gateshead Learning Disability Health Trainers will be offering a one to one advice service at Guidepost based in Connexions. The session will run from 10.30 - 12.00 and people with Learning Disabilities will be able to get advice for them selves and family/friends. Connexions is located in Gateshead Metro/bus Interchange in the centre of Town

Whickham & District Motor Club's No Smoking Day 24/02/10
Whickham & District Motor Club are hosting a No Smoking Day event as part of their Annual General Meeting at Kibblesworth Working Men's Club near Gateshead. Club members are keen to pass on the No Smoking Day message to attendees, their families, friends and colleagues. This doesn’t end with No Smoking Day. Whickham & District Motor Club would also like to adopt the No Smoking theme in the long term by associating the club with the message at events and activities.

February events in Hartlepool 23/02/10
On February 1, NHS Hartlepool, Stockton and Hartlepool Stop Smoking Service and Hartlepool Borough Council co-hosted a briefing event to introduce 2010’s theme. The event was well attended by representatives from local industry and commerce, Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade, various agencies of Hartlepool BC as well as a range of health professionals. On February 23 a photo-opportunity was held for local media. The fire crew from Stranton Fire Station was photographed used car cutting equipment to symbolically help Robin Cass – a successful quitter, ‘Break Free’ from the shackles of smoking. Robin, who lives in Hartlepool, quit smoking 4 years ago with the help of Stockton and Hartlepool NHS Stop Smoking Service – one of the most successful stop smoking services in the country. He was also featured in last year’s poster campaign commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the North East Stop Smoking Services.
