Organiser of the Year Awards 2010
If the number of entries to the Organiser of the Year Awards is anything to go by then the 2010 No Smoking Day saw more events taking place across the UK than ever before. And that means more smokers were reached than ever before, which is what it is all about after all!
We had award entries ranging from Kilmarnock to Afghanistan, and there was no shortage of resourcefulness, imagination and creativity. In fact the quality of the entries were so high that deciding on the winners was very hard indeed, which is why we have also highly commended the efforts of some our organisers.
The use of the 2010 'Break Free' theme yielded some very interesting activities, for instance members of the Plymouth NHS Stop Smoking Service abseiled down a building, and James Cook University Hospital went to town on a prison break theme deserving of a BAFTA for best set design!
Wennington Hall School took the hands theme to another level with
their attempt to break the World Record of producing the largest mural of
colourful handprints, more than 200 pupils got involved to raise awareness
amongst their peers, parents and teachers.
Unperturbed by desert conditions, when Exeter based Captain Maureen Coshall
was deployed to join the Afghanistan Army Primary Health Care Service
she made it her mission to engage in combat with a common enemy amongst
our troops: tobacco addiction. As winner of the Best Armed Forces Category,
the team demonstrated die-hard determination to improve the health, fitness,
and in turn performance, of both young and more experienced Armed Forces
personnel.
Some organisers used existing channels of communication to great effect and for little cost. Bridgend County Borough Council, for example, used its intranet to generate a very impressive referral count.
Many organisers proved that a small budget could still make a big impact when it comes to decorating their stalls. North Tyneside PCT made their own props using recycled wood, cigarette packets, old clothes, paper, imagination, and `Blue Peter skills.'
