How to write a press release
Journalists receive 100s of press releases every week so it is important to get to the point straight away.
- 1st paragraph should contain the 5 Ws (Who, What, Why, Where, When)
- The headline should be catchy, it's the first thing they read so keep their interest
- The quote should be from the most credible person and someone who is prepared to do an interview (don't just roll out your Chief Executive, the Stop Smoking Advisor would be better from the reader's point of view)
- Make sure it contains your 3 key messages
- The press release should be no more than one page (max. 2), any extra bits of information should go in the notes to editors on the next page
- Have the contact details for your press officer or person who is dealing with the media. Direct number, mobile number and email address. Don't forget to give an out of hours number too
- If photographs are available or a photo opportunity on the day, let them know
