Activities to challenge your listeners
It's tough giving up smoking. Most people appreciate a bit of support and encouragement. That's what No Smoking Day is all about so we've come up with a few ideas you might like.
Phone-ins
- Millions will try to stop smoking this No Smoking Day. Support and a positive outlook are key elements necessary to quitting. Why not get your listeners to phone in with their personal stories of smoking and quitting? Possible topics you could use are: how they quit, why they wanted to quit, how another person quitting has made a difference to their life.
- Invite a stop smoking advisor from your local NHS stop smoking service onto the show to answer callers' queries about the methods for stopping smoking and what it'll feel like. Details of your local stop smoking service are on the enclosed letter.
- National and local representatives from No Smoking Day are available for interviews - call the No Smoking Day press office on 020 7739 5110 to find out more.
- Smoking 20-a-day costs over £2,000 every year. What else could your listeners do with that money? Invite listeners to phone in with the benefits they've felt since they stopped smoking - it could help inspire others to give it a go too!
Reality Radio
- Is anyone at your station or people you are interviewing taking the first step? They could keep an on-air diary of any problems that they have faced and how they have overcome them, proving that if they can do it your listeners can too! You could also get in contact with your local stop smoking service and see what advice they give and how it helps! Details are on the enclosed letter.
- The right song could help inspire your listeners to stop smoking. Why not get callers to nominate motivational songs that will help them as they try to kick the habit, or have helped them to quit in the past?
- Challenge listeners to identify the name of the songs using our radio play list. The listeners with the most correct answers could win a prize.
On-air Games
- Challenge your listeners with the tobacco teaser quiz on this No Smoking Day - get two listeners involved and give a prize to whoever gets most correct!
- Challenge listeners to call in with smoking-related songs. A prize could be given to the listener who is the most creative with their choice of song! We can provide No Smoking Day goodie bags that you can use as a prize - just ask!
- Smoke screen: listeners guess the famous celebrity ex-smokers based on the clues. We've found a few examples for you:
